A Big Beautiful Bow Tutorial

A Big Beautiful Bow Tutorial

I love the look of a quilted project hanging from a big flouncy bow, as I intend to do with my Wings of Liberty quilt on my door during the 4th of July celebrations!

The bow works perfectly with the scale of the Wings of Liberty quilt, which measures 28" x 32".  The fabric that I used for it is the same fabric I used to bind the quilt, but you could use any coordinating piece of fabric.  To help you with fabric selections for the quilt, check out the Wings of Liberty fabric collection that I've curated for this project.

Truth be told, I should call this the Faux Bow Tutorial because this isn't a real bow!  It's made of up four elements, and here are the instructions for making this simple project...

Fabric requirements:

1/2 yard of fabric (18" X width of fabric) cut as shown in diagram...

STEP ONE

•For the actual bow part, fold the 7" x 30" strip in half (right sides together) to make a 7"x 15" piece.  Using 1/4" seam, stitch along the 15" sides.  Turn right side out, then tuck the raw edges towards the inside of the pouch and press.  Stuff pieces of batting into the bow to give it some structure and "pouf".  Hand stitch the bow pouch closed on the end.

•Fold the bow cinch piece in half length-wise (wrong sides together), and stitch with 1/4" seam.  Press the piece so that the seam is on the back side of the cinch.

•Wrap the cinch around the bow and tie in the back of the bow.

STEP TWO

•Fold the faux ribbon pieces in half with right sides together.  Cut one edge off at a 45 degree angle.  Using 1/4" seam, stitch around the edge of the ribbon, leaving the top part open.  Turn rights sides out and press.

STEP THREE

Fold the hanging strip in half lengthwise with right sides together and press.  with 1/4" seam, stitch along the long edge.  Turn the strip right side out and press.  Fold it over itself and press as shown.

STEP FOUR

•With the bow piece right side down, layer the ribbon pieces, then the hanging strip onto the bow.  Pin each piece in place (or use a hot glue gun to secure all the pieces together).

Voila!  You've made a darling faux bow to use with your quilt.  Secure the ends of the hanging strip to your quilt with pins on the back of the quilt, and use a wreath hanger to hang the quilt on your door!
