How to Make a
Fabric Wrapped Frame
No Sew • Beginner Friendly • 20 Minutes or Less
Wrapping a frame in fabric is a quick and easy way to make the perfect display for collage (or any other type of art!). It takes just a few supplies and about 20 minutes.
Required Supplies
- Frame - there are two ways to make this, 1. a frame with a mat or 2. a frame without a mat.
- Fabric Scissors
- Fabric, enough to overlap each side of the frame by a few inches
- Hot glue gun

Getting Started
Step 1
Measure out your fabric for your frame, leaving about 2"-3" around each side of the frame, depending on the thickness of the frame. Using fabric scissors or a rotary cutter, cut the fabric.

Step 2
Place your frame front side facing down on the reverse side of fabric. Make sure to lay your frame accordingly if your fabric is directional. If there are any hooks attached to the back side of the frame, remove them now (you can add them back later if needed).
Begin adding a line of hot glue to the back of the frame (don't add too long of a line, it will dry before you can wrap it with fabric) and pull the fabric up and over the frame, adhering to the frame with the glue.

Continue working in small sections with glue and wrapping until you reach a corner. To wrap the corners, pinch the fabric tightly as if wrapping a present and secure in place on top with glue.

Continue working around the frame until each side is wrapped. If needed, trim off any excess fabric once wrapped and glued in place. Once you begin wrapping the front side of the frame, you won't want any excess fabric hanging down.

Step 3
Flip your frame to it's front side, it will be completely wrapped in fabric at this point. Using your fabric scissors, cut out the center of the frame, leaving about 1"-2" from the edges of the frame (use your fingers to feel for the edge of the frame since it will be covered with fabric). Then, cut into the corners of the frame.

Step 4
Flip the frame back over to the backside, and repeat the process of gluing and wrapping the fabric in small sections, making sure to glue your fabric into the smaller divet of the frame rather than wrapping your fabric too high. If you notice too much excess fabric, trim it off as you won't be able to secure your canvas back into the frame with too much fabric.

Setp 5
At this point if your frame has a mat, repeat steps 1 - 4 with the same fabric. This frame that I'm using does not have a mat so I am moving onto my canvas. Because this frame does not have a mat and I want to utilize more fabric, I am wrapping my canvas in the same print. Using the back/canvas that came with your frame, wrap it with fabric and secure with hot glue on the back.

Step 6
Add your collage or art back to your frame and enjoy!
